Fetch Blog

A lot of work goes into our paper. But even more goes onto it.

Paper's the blank canvas, the starting point. It's the creativity of the people with whom we work that brings it to life. The Fetch Blog is a little snap shot of that work. Here we show you our latest paper samplers, cool work our clients have done, KWD news including environmental updates, wild paper tales and any up and coming paper, design and print events. We'll be uploading new stuff every week so send us your best work.

Gertrude Contemporary Rebrand Launch

Gertrude Contemporary introduce new futuristic stationery with a bold colour palette!

Fabio Ongarato Design (FOD) worked closely with K.W.Doggett Fine Paper creating a new Gertrude Contemporary identity. It was launched during the 2010 Melbourne Art Fair to coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the organisation. Forming part of FOD's ongoing relationship with the institution, the new identity has been developed as a system rather than a mark, drawing together the many aspects of the organisation beyond the gallery spaces such as artist studios, residency, curatorial, writing and publication programs.

FOD developed a flexible identity to allow for the evolution of the brand. With bespoke typeface, a new website, exhibition catalogues and a range of printed collateral, these items form the beginning of the identity system. The fluorescent colour palette, contrasting paper stocks and typography launch a new future for Gertrude Contemporary, placing it firmly within an international context.

Positive Posters

Reaping positive design havoc all over Melbourne and the world!

A bunch of young Melbournians calling themselves Positive Posters are asking graphic designers all over the world to submit a poster design (to the 2010 theme A Glass Half Full) that will inspire and challenge people make a positive difference to the way they live their lives.

“We started the competition last year with no expectations. But ended up with 339 entries, from 53 countries. The third most amount of entries from Iran. We are still trying to figure that one out!” said competition founder, Nick Hallam.

Last years winner came from Slovakia. His poster was seen all over Melbourne, and even travelled to the North and South Pole. This years competition is at the half way point and they have already received over 250 entries from 52 different countries. And counting!

The non-profit competition is held annually between July and October. They give designers two months to create and submit a positive design that responds to the theme of that year. An exhibition is held of the top 30 posters, and the winner chosen by a group of international judges. They then print 4000 copies of the winning poster and paste it all over the streets of Melbourne, Australia. And send a few off around the world too!

The winner also gets Adobe CS5, Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet, Pantone Colour Bridge, IdN Feature Article, IdN Subscription, Spook Mag Subscription, Fat Clothing Voucher and a Keep Cup.

Submissions are open from the 12th July to 10th September.

The exhibition will be held at No Vacancy for a week from the 12th of October. The winner will be announced during this time.

K.W.Doggett Fine Paper is proud to sponsor Positive Posters in 2010 to be a sponsor of such an optimistic project!

FSC has introduced a new label
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) have recently undergone some changes to their labelling system. They have simplified the language and created a new trademark logo. Click through our images above to see the new look graphics.

Feedback from FSC members was the old label system had become too confusing and the detailed text was found un-meaningful to customers. The mixed sources label was an example of this and will now be listed only as “Mix” with the simple statement “from responsible sources”. A change we believe will make it easier for your customers to understand the wood comes from a managed forest resource. The criteria for meeting the FSC standard is still the same, only the artwork has changed. For a full explanation of the different criteria please visit www.fscaustralia.org.au

The new logos are effective now however FSC are operating a transition period up until January 2011. Any re-prints or new jobs after this time will need to showcase the new labels. Pre-existing material does not need to be re-printed.

Approval for logo usage will remain the same. Printers who are FSC certified will still need to submit final artwork to the accrediting body for approval. However the number appearing in the logo will now be a licence code instead of the CoC number. The licence code still tracks the job from logo back to printer but is shorter and neater for display on product. The full Chain of Custody Certificate (CoC) number will still be required on paperwork such as invoices.

To help you understand this change we have included some FSC questions and answers in the environmental section of our website. Should we not address your specific query please feel free to submit one via the site.  Further information about FSC can be obtained from www.fscaustralia.org.au

See Saw Business Cards

When designing their new cards, See Saw wanted to showcase the idea of balance. Each card has a 'business' side and a 'personal' side with each staff member choosing imagery representing two opposing aspects of their personality.

In terms of the finish, they wanted to utilise a gold foil and a textured stock. Rives was exactly what they had been looking for - a relatively unusual stock with a gorgeous texture and perfect off white colour.

The cards were printed two colour duotone by RA Printing on 350gsm Rives Natural White. They were then foiled by Avon Graphics, pasted together and form-cut to achieve the final 700gsm card.

Doggett's make the cut with new sheeter

We've put in a new sheeter!

K.W.Doggett Fine Paper Melbourne has successfully installed Australia's first SHM 1650 DR (dual rotary) sheeter from Pemco, a company of the Körber PaperLink Group (KPL). What this means for our customers is it will help to improve the quality, throughput and converting costs of all cut-sheet products.

With the high speeds and close tolerances of modern printing equipment, the operator's job is now made easier. Changeover times are minimal and with clean, highly precise output on press-ready pellets, this results in our customers enjoying reduced press downtime and minimised operational disruption.

Overall, the new machine’s versatility will help Doggett's expand service to other folio sheet users. We can now respond more quickly to market demands and the high product quality supports ongoing customer satisfaction.
